KPop Demon Hunters 2: What We Know

A second KPop Demon Hunters film is coming, and the year attached to it is 2029. The detail worth holding on to is that Sony Pictures Animation has itself described that date as optimistic. The hedge is the most informative part of the announcement. What that leaves is a sequel that exists and a year that could move, rather than a date to write in a diary.

What has actually been announced

The confirmed list is short, and one item on it matters more than the rest. There is a sequel, it is going ahead at Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, 2029 is the year that has been given, with the studio flagging it as ambitious, and in March 2026 Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans were announced as returning to write and direct it. The pair who made the first film are making the second. Beyond that, very little. No title. No plot outline. No release month, no teaser, no trailer, no confirmed voice cast, no announced songs. Netflix has not said when any of that will be shared, and no first look has been dated.

Anything more specific circulating online is worth a single test: does it trace back to Netflix or to Sony Pictures Animation? If it does not, it is guesswork with a headline attached. Fan casting, supposed track titles and leaked plot beats all sit on the wrong side of that line until one of those two names puts them in writing.

What 2029 is worth, according to the studio

Feature animation moves slowly by design. Story development, design, voice recording, animation and finishing run across years rather than months, and a musical stretches that further, because songs have to be written and recorded before the sequences built around them can be animated at all.

In February 2026, Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson said the sequel would likely not be finished by 2029. That is the studio's own read on its own date, and it is not a reassurance. No later date has been announced, and this page will not invent one: 2029 is the only year on the record, held by the studio itself at arm's length.

What the first film left open

KPop Demon Hunters arrived on Netflix in June 2025, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. It follows HUNTR/X, made up of Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who tour as a girl group and hunt demons, their singing sustaining the Honmoon, the barrier that holds demons off from the human world. Against them are the Saja Boys, a demon boy band fronted by Jinu and working under the demon king Gwi-Ma. The songs carry the plot rather than decorate it, "Golden", "Soda Pop", "Your Idol" and "What It Sounds Like" among them.

Whether any of those threads continue is not known. The ending leaves room for another story, and the directors have talked about the film: Kang has said the follow up is planned to be larger and more eventful than the first, and has pointed at backstories for Mira and Zoey as territory worth covering. What none of them has described is a plot. The returning voice cast, the setting and the music are all unconfirmed, and a page that filled in those blanks would be inventing them.

Most of what fills a wait this long is not news, it is merchandise. The dolls page covers all three of HUNTR/X and, of the Saja Boys, Jinu alone, which is the whole story of the merchandise so far.
